There are specific key figures for architectures in certain periods.
Our members were walking around Erie Pennsylvania downtown,
and found some of the classical and medieval architectures.

Above, it the city map of Erie Downtown, and the colored dots are
the areas where the architectures are located.

Classical Architectures

The Classical architectures can be classified by some parts of the architectures,
such as columns.

there are some characteristics to classical architecture.
- Doric Order
- Ionic Order
- Corinthian Order
- Fluted Order
- Entablature
- Pediment
The First building that we can look at for the classical architecture is
the 'Erie Art Museum', purple dot on the map, located in 411 State Street, Erie Pa, 16501.

This building was built in 1839.
The columns specify the features of classical architecture.

                Fluted Column
The columns have vertical grooves in
the column which signifies the "fluted column"

Doric Order

The Column also has "Doric Order", with stiff-looking masculine, robust, no-frills and plain capital.
(capital in means of column is the head or the top of the column in between the entablature and column.)

Capital is in between column and "entablture".
entablature can be seen in the next building, the blue dot on the map,
located in 459 West 6th Street Erie Pa, 16507.

This building was built in late 1800's

             Entablature
Entablature is the salb that connects
column to the roof

The column above has "Corinthian Order", and there was another building
that had Corinthian Column as well. It was the green dot on the map,
located in 609 Walnut Street Erie Pa, 16502

The building was built approximately mid to late 1800's

Corinthian Order

The capital of the "Corinthian Column" is
decorated with acanthus leaves.

There is one more type of the column which is "Ionic Order".
The building that had ionic order was the red dot on the map,
located in 502 West 7th Street Erie Pa, 16502.

It was built in mid to late 1800's as well.
It actually have some features that falls to
medieval architectures as well, so this will be introduced again later.

           Ionic Order
The column with ionic order shape is opposite of doric order. They are soft-looking, feminine, slender and elegant with more curves, and the capital is scrolled.

In the architecture, there is a part called pediment, which is on the roof.
This can can be seen in the building we found, the pink dot in the map,
located in 238 West 6th Street Erie PA, 16507.

This was build in mid to late 1800's
this building also will be introduce again later.

Pediment

Pediment is the triangular infill
on either side of the roof.

these were the characteristics that signifies the architectures of classical period.

Medieval Architectures

There are also some special features to medieval architectures
that enables the classification to be possible.

- Lancet Arch
- Equilateral Arch
- Ogee Arch
- Relieving Arch
-Quatrefoil or tresfoil
- Corbel
- Gargoyle or Grotesque

Unlike the classical architectures with had several types of columns,
medieval architectures have several types of arches.

Sometimes they used several types of features in one building,
this is one of the kind. This is the orange dot in the map.
The building is located in 250 West 7th Street Erie PA, 16501.
It was built in 1930.

       Lancet Arch

by joining four pendants.
(there are Tres(three), Cinque(five)foils and so on)

The Ogee or venetian arch is an arch that
begins with equilateral arch,
but is curvy at the top, forming pointy

The building that was introduce earlier, which had the red dot,
on the back of the building, there were some medieval features as well.
This was the back side of the building.

        Relieving Arch

Relieving arch is the arch that is plain,
and is serving purpose of weight support

Another building that was introduce earlier, with the pink dot on the map,
also had some medieval features.

Corbel

Corbel is the structure,
projecting bracket to support weight

The last feature of the medieval architecture
that we are going to introduce is "Grotesque".
This is not one the map above because it was not near other buildings,
it was outside of the map we got.

This building is located at 1217 West 33rd Street Erie PA, 16508

 It was built around 1940's
